When I make my instruments there are a number of important criteria which need to be satisfied. The Acoustic properties & Response of the instrument underpin my construction and design. The selection of good quality seasoned wood is an essential element to revealing the best acoustic response from the instrument. Having access to original classical Italian instruments has assisted me in recreating the makers style and artistry. With the availability of the original makers , detailed Instrument measurements, arching & scroll casts, scientific analysis, original construction methods, the superb professional training from the Newark School of Violin Making ,and years of practical experience, it has been possible for me to make instruments which capture the properties of the original, and craft a violin which responds excellently possessing the acoustic footprint of some of the best classical Instruments. The Instrument Set-up allows the Player to freely express their skills by enhancing the acoustic properties. It is critically important to ensure the instrument Set-up allows the instrument to respond to its maximum potential. The fitting of the Bridge and Sound Post can change the character, response, tone and colour of the music completely. Another important element of the set-up is the String type which is chosen. The players understanding of the music will assist them in choosing the most appropriate string type to express that character.
The aesthetic character of the instrument must satisfy the players desire. There are many makers who present there instruments with an antique finish , but i am one who likes the passing of time to make its mark on my instruments.
